Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE as well as the Ruler of Dubai, has recently Validated the plan proposed by Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects. This plan also authorizes the construction of a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport. It will become one of the largest airport in the world.. The cost of constructing this new terminal is estimated at AED 128 billion, allowing the annual passenger handling capacity to rise to 260 million people.

The approval was made during the visit of His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed at Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects. The visit was also attended by His Excellency Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Crown Prince of Dubai. Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai. And His Excellency Sheikh Maktoum. First Deputy of Dubai. Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance.

Statement by Sheikh Mohammed

Sheikh Mohammed: “Today the designs of the new passenger Terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport were approved and construction began at the cost of AED 128 billion, in line with the Dubai Aviation Corporation strategy.

Airport Capacity and Features

Al Maktoum International Airport’s capacity will reach 260,000,000 passengers, making it the largest in the entire world. It will be 5 times larger than the current Dubai International Airport. All Dubai International Airport operations will also be transferred there in the future. The airport will be able to accommodate 400 aircraft and have five parallel runways. “New technologies in aviation will be introduced for the first-time,” His Majesty said.

Development Plan

“We will need to build housing for 1 million people as we build an airport city around Dubai South.” It will house the world’s largest companies in the air transportation and logistics sectors,” His Majesty added. “We will build a new development project for future generations, which will ensure stable and continuous growth for our children. Dubai is the world’s new airport, port and urban hub.

Accompanying Officials

HH Sheikh Mohammed had also been accompanied during his visit by His Excellency Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi. The latter is Minister of Cabinet and the Chairman for Dubai Executive Office.

Masterplan Examination

Sheikh Mohammed was inspecting the master plan of the Airport of the Future. The Airport of the Future, once fully developed and completed, will be the world’s biggest airport, covering 70 square kilometres. It is projected that the airport will have a maximum capacity of over 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per year.

During the ceremony, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed was informed of the strategic implementation plan as well as the key design elements for the Airport.

Comments by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed

HH. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed, commenting on the event, stated: “With his continuous support, blessings and vision for Dubai Aviation, we are announcing the commencement of construction and design for the Jebel Al airport.” The first phase should be ready in 10 to 15 years, and have the capacity to handle 150 million passengers annually.

Future Growth and Technology

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed emphasized that the upcoming airport would be five times larger than Dubai International Airport. He said this would help Dubai prepare for its expected growth in the aviation field over the next 40 years. The new airport will be a hub for an airline planning to expand both its fleet and the number of passengers it carries significantly. This facility will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and offer unmatched passenger service.

Al Maktoum International (AMI) Features

Al Maktoum International, or AMI, is planned so as to be a giant leap into the future. It will feature five parallel, quadruple independently operated runways, east and west processing terminals, four concourses satellites with more than 400 aircraft contact points, a continuous automated people mover for passengers, as well an integrated landside transportation hub for road, Metro, city air, and other transport modes.

Sustainability and Vision

Al Maktoum International embraces sustainability while aligning its vision with that of the UAE for a sustainably-built environment. Its integrated design is aimed at leveraging local resources to meet sustainability and efficiency targets. AMI hopes to achieve LEED Gold.

Project Benefits

His Excellency Khalifa A Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman Dubai Aviation City Corporation, highlighted the benefits of the project. The new airport’s development will play a significant role in Dubai’s future economy, contributing to the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. It is estimated that it will produce a workforce and residential requirements for over a hundred thousand people working and living in Dubai South.
